Opal Creek is a public treasure, and we’ve designed our programs to ensure that there’s an opportunity for everyone to come experience and learn from this extraordinary ancient forest watershed. All of our programs are overnight, so that you can immerse yourself fully in exploration and relaxation at our off-grid wilderness site.

Opal Creek Expeditions is our flagship program; there is nothing else quite like it in Oregon. These weeklong summer backpacking trips for 10-18 year olds incorporate the best practices in backcountry travel skills with observational science about the western Cascades. Our Basecamp and Junior Basecamp programs for 8-12 year olds provide an introduction to overnight camp and to the ancient forest.

Our workshop programs for adults and families provide opportunities to go in-depth on a variety of topics, with a healthy balance of science and art, wellness and relaxation.

We are proud to partner with the National Outdoor Leadership School’s Wilderness Medicine Institute to host several of the premiere wilderness medicine courses in the US. These courses are designed to prepare outdoor and medical professionals for any emergency in a situation where resources and communications are limited.

Finally, our twice annual volunteer weekends give you the opportunity to get down and dirty and help us maintain our historic mining town. We couldn’t do it without you!
