Outdoor School

Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center promotes forest stewardship through education by offering an unparalleled site for all ages to learn from the Opal Creek Wilderness. Our outdoor school program, with program scheduling available April through October, offers grade schools, university classes, and extramural groups a chance to approach environmental science in a hands-on, engaging format in the most beautiful classroom imaginable: the Opal Creek forest.

From April through October, our workshops focus on local flora and fauna, outdoor skills and lifestyle, and offer everyone, including little ones, an opportunity to delve into the pristine Opal Creek environment hands-on.

Backpacking Programs: Opal Creek Expeditions

In July and August, Opal Creek Expeditions offer kids ages 10-18 an opportunity to become more intimately acquainted with the Pacific Northwest through week-long backpacking courses that traverse the Opal Creek Wilderness and beyond. Participants see remote reaches only visible to those willing to carry their homes on their backs.

Wilderness Medicine Institute Courses

For outdoor and medical professionals or amateur back-country adventurers, Opal Creek hosts several Wilderness Medicine Institute courses throughout the season. One of only a few wilderness hosts for these courses, Opal Creek is uniquely suited to offer students an authentic experience as they tackle emergency scenarios.

Volunteer Opportunities

Opal Creek hosts biannual volunteer stewardship weekends at Jawbone Flats. We appreciate all the time our volunteers have donated over the many years, and realize we can’t do what we do without you! Click here for this year’s volunteer opportunities.

Cabin Rentals

We have four cabins available for private rental from April through November, for those looking to spend a few relaxing days among the tall trees and clear waters of the Opal Creek Wilderness.

Our famous kitchen frequently serves meals in our lodge. Cabin renters have the option of adding meals to their reservation when they are available.

And finally, Opal Creek sponsors or hosts several events throughout the year. These events are a great way to meet other Opal Creek supporters and enthusiasts for activities beyond our mission-inspired programming.
